Living Waterways

Kirkham Gallery
6 May - 24 June 2007

Living Waterways is a hands-on (and feet-on!) exploration of Britain's Waterways, with plenty to see and do for the whole family.

The river Thames was at the heart of Britain’s network of industrial waterways. Although seriously impacted by the development of the railways, these rivers and canals remained vital to the movement of goods around the country. The exhibition looks at the life and times of those who lived and worked on the waterways, as well as the way in which canals and rivers are now central to today’s leisure industry. Also present is an examination of the abundant wildlife to be found in and along these now clean waterways.

The exhibition combines historical paintings and artefacts with film clips and interactive elements such as the giant snakes & ladders ‘Canal Builder’ game. You can explore a life-sized recreation of a narrow boat cabin Also on show are several colourfully decorated canal-ware items with their patterns of ‘roses and castles’
