Martin Ireland

The Wall
12 May - 15 July 2007

These paintings by Martin Ireland represent a long standing interest in rowing on the Tideway. He has been no stranger to early morning outings at Hammersmith. Sitting in a boat waiting for instructions from the cox and hanging about during regattas waiting for crews to launch from a pontoon provides ample opportunity to observe and take it all in.

The club colours of blades, oarsmen taking the catch, the sweep of the stroke and the rippling surfaces are all captured in these colourful paintings. Other references are from observations taken from the riverbank and various bridges between Putney and Richmond.
