Flood!

Geography
The causes, impact and management of floods in a MEDC using the River Thames as a case study. Students are given a role for the day and collect information about the River Thames and Henley from the galleries. They carry out experiments to illustrate flooding and other river processes in the Education Centre. Fieldwork enables them to see the various methods of flood management in the Museum area.

• Development of geographical vocabulary
• Field work and opportunity for independent learning


Paint Me a River

Art & Design
Students are shown a wide range of work by artists who have painted water and river landscapes. There are opportunities to draw and paint from observation inside and outside the galleries. There is also a practical screenprinting and mixed media activity.
Students discover:
• How different artists, using different styles and from different cultures, have represented water in their paintings
• What sort of vocabulary to use to describe a painting
• How they can achieve a sense of distance in a composition
• How they can develop their work further independently

• Developing creativity and imagination
• Developing practical and critical skills
• Learning to make value judgements and aesthetic decisions
• Exploring ideas and meanings in the work of artists
• This course can also be adapted for GCSE


Write Me a River

English
Use the river and museum objects to inspire creative writing in context
• Play the metaphor game to stimulate collaborative language development
• Write individual poems to develop imaginative and formal confidence
• Focus on close textual skills: imagery, editing, sequencing and voice
• Group work on editing, presentation and performance
• Gather creative-response ideas for ICT/Artwork

• Use imaginative vocabulary and varied literary techniques and forms
• Organise and structure material to achieve particular effects
• Analyse critically their own writing
• Listen, understand and respond to the work of others
• Group discussion & interaction
