Job Description
- Key Responsibilities
To be responsible for the Museum's curatorial and collections management.
This will include responsibility for the museum's permanent exhibitions, special exhibition programme and a range of projects designed to ensure the widest possible appeal to our varied audiences. Collections management is centred on our Vernon system which is also accessible through the website. The curator is also responsible for the department's annual plan, which is developed with the Chief Executive and other members of the Museum's senior management team. The plan and budget will be presented to the full Trustee Board and be in line with the wider strategy set by trustees.
- To be responsible for the next major gallery upgrade, the Thames Gallery, planned to open in 2011.
This project is currently in development and will be the major focus for the Museum in ensuring its future success and relevance. The project will include the River Discovery Centre and a series of outreach initiatives. A strong project team is being built involving museum staff, volunteers and trustees, consultants and a range of stakeholders.
To be the key professional curatorial contact for regional and national museum partners & organisations.

- To be aware of the Museum's Procedures and Mission Statement and work towards its fulfilment.
The Senior Curator will report to the Chief Executive and be a part of the Museum's senior management team.
Main Duties
- To ensure that the Museum's collections management system is fully up to date.
To work with the Education and Marketing departments to maximise the impact of the special exhibitions programme, lectures and events.
- To work with the development team to secure project funding for a wide range of initiatives.
- To manage and further develop our volunteer programme.
- To work with the Chief Executive (who is currently Chairman of the Sports Heritage Network) and to ensure the Museum maximises the opportunities presented by London 2012.
- To chair a series of internal working groups, including the 'Exhibition Team' planning future special exhibitions and the monthly acquisitions meeting.
- To represent the Museum's curatorial interest at appropriate organisations including the Museums Association, AIM and the Thames Valley Museums Curatorial Group.
As a Senior Manager - Prepare and submit an annual curatorial plan and budget to the Chief Executive and then run the department within agreed limits.
- Develop and maintain a positive, professional and happy working environment
- Manage and motivate staff to achieve the Museum's goals.
- Develop and implement procedures and training within department.
- Ensure compliance all relevant Health & Safety Procedures.
Limits of Authority
- Under the Purchase Order Procedure the relevant limit of authority within budget parameters and departmental responsibility is £2,000.
Duty Manager
- On a rota basis to be Duty Manager including, typically, one weekend day per month.
