Modernism and Tradition: Hepworth, Piper and British Art between the Wars

2nd May 2018 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

This event is fully booked.

Dr Chris Stephens, Director of the Holburne Museum, will deliver this fascinating lecture which will provide a captivating insight to the world of Piper, Hepworth and British Art between the Wars.

John Piper famously struggled with the conflict between an international abstract art, with which he experimented, and national traditions, with which he would become more securely associated. In contrast, Barbara Hepworth has been seen to have epitomised an uncompromising commitment to utopian modernism that transcended national boundaries. This talk will explore how both artists and numerous others negotiated in different ways a synthesis of national and international art forms and values in a period when such concerns extended beyond the artistic realm into the fraught world of politics.
