Printmaking and Landscape in 1940s

21st November 2018 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

There is a rich tradition of both landscape art and print making in Britain. Artists in the pre-and post war years explored these traditions with exciting, thoughtful and often dramatic effects. Notable practitioners such as John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Edward Bawden all experimented with works on paper in years of austerity for both artists and collectors. This talk by Sandra Smith, History of Art tutor, will introduce the works in the exhibition Approaching Thunder: 1940s British Prints and Drawings with a brief exploration of these works in the context of life in Britain in the 1940s.
